SEO or Google Ads: which should you choose?

How the two differ, what each one needs, when to pick one or combine them and the questions to ask whoever runs it for you.

SEO and Google Ads both put your business in front of people who search. They work in different ways, they cost money in different places and they suit different situations. This guide helps you choose, or combine them, without hype and without promises that nobody can keep.

What each one is

  • SEO (search engine optimisation) improves your site so that it can appear in the unpaid results. You do not pay Google for a click or a position. You invest in the site, its content and its technical health, and the effect builds over time.
  • Google Ads places paid adverts on the results page, marked as adverts. In a search campaign you set a budget, choose the searches you want to appear for and write the adverts. When the budget stops, the adverts stop.

The main differences

  • Control. With ads you choose the words, the message and the page a visitor lands on. With SEO, Google decides what to show and when. You influence it, you do not control it.
  • Speed and durability. Ads can start working soon after a campaign is approved, but the traffic lasts only as long as you pay. SEO takes longer to build, and a good page can keep bringing visitors without a cost per click.
  • Cost shape. Ads cost money for each click, so a poor landing page wastes budget. SEO costs work up front: research, writing, technical fixes and upkeep.
  • Certainty. Nobody can guarantee a position in the unpaid results. Be careful with anyone who does. Ads give you more certainty of appearing, but not of getting enquiries.

What both need

  • A clear goal. Enquiries, quote requests, bookings or calls. Without one you cannot judge either channel.
  • A page that turns a visit into an action. A fast, clear page with one obvious next step. See website speed.
  • Measurement. Set up conversion tracking for ads and Search Console for SEO before you spend. See how to measure SEO results.

How to choose

  • You need visitors for a date-driven offer, a launch or a new site. Ads can fill the gap while SEO builds.
  • You sell something people search for all year, and you can write useful pages. SEO is usually the better long-term base.
  • Searches in your market are crowded and expensive. Test with a small ad budget first to learn which searches bring real enquiries. Then use that to shape your SEO pages.
  • Your site has technical problems. Fix them first. Ads sent to a slow or broken page waste money, and SEO cannot work on a site that search engines cannot read. Use the technical SEO checklist.
  • You work in two languages or markets. Plan each market on its own. Search terms differ between the UK and France, and a translation of a keyword is not always what people type. See multilingual websites.

How they work together

Ad campaigns show you the real search terms that lead to enquiries within a short time. You can use those terms in your site's pages. In return, a page that is useful and clear also helps an advert: Google's Quality Score looks at the expected click rate, the relevance of the advert and the experience on the landing page, and it affects what you pay and how often your advert shows.

Questions to ask whoever runs it for you

  • Who owns the Google Ads and Search Console accounts? It should be you.
  • What will be measured, and how will you see it? Ask for access to the data, not only a monthly summary.
  • Which pages will the ads send visitors to, and who builds them?
  • How will you report what did not work?
  • What happens to the work if we stop? Ads stop. SEO work on the site stays.
